V-Day

Today was Thomas’ 2-month doctor’s visit. He is officially “perfect” (the doctor’s words, not mine, though I would have to agree).

The stats:
12 pounds, 12 oz (75th percentile)
24″ long (90th percentile)

This was also his first round of vaccinations, and he was none too pleased when those evil nurses poked him in his legs. It was actually pretty funny, because he didn’t even start crying until after the first shot was completely finished. But then the two remaining shots really got him going. He held his breath for seriously about 5 seconds, and his face turned so, so red before he let out the loudest shriek I’ve ever heard him make. Luckily, he was easily consoled and chilled out within a few minutes.

Since then, we’ve been back at home and he’s been close to, but not quite, normal. Normally, his daily pattern is: eat, stay awake, alert, and happy for anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours, sleep for anywhere between 30 minutes and 3 hours, and then repeat. Since the shots, the “awake, alert, happy” portion of this cycle has been replaced by more of a “wake up, look around skeptically, and whimper” period of 5-30 minutes. His first two doses of tylenol ever (at the doctor’s office and just a few minutes ago) seem to be helping with this. (Currently, he is in sleep mode.)

Incidentally, the last few nights he has slept for 8+ hours. I wonder what effect the shots will have tonight…

And finally, just for good measure, here’s a cute photo:

Oh, and also:

Since the picture of Otto and Thomas didn’t post for some reason, here’s another go at it:

Just like riding a bike…

Well, yesterday I actually worked on my dissertation for the first time in exactly 2 months (happy 2-month birthday to Thomas!). I was worried that it would be really hard for me to get back into the swing of it after such a long hiatus, but it wasn’t too bad. I won’t bore you with too many details, but in addition to re-reading what I had been working on prior to June 28th, I did actually restructure the intro to the chapter I’m working on.

I haven’t been posting much, because it seems like I don’t have much new to post about. Well, that’s not entirely true. Thomas does new and fantastic things every day. In the past few days he’s been making new cooing sounds and very deliberately batting at toys dangled above him. He is more and more alert, curious, and happy, and we’re having an awesome time hanging out with him. But my role in that hanging out is rather peripheral, it seems. I do a lot of smiling and hugging and kissing and reading and dangling and encouraging, but not a lot that is particularly blogworthy.

I did observe one amusing thing today:
At the coffee shop where I go to work on my dissertation, the wooden cabinets behind the counter are neatly labeled with their contents. Most of the drawers have small, white tags with very small, black text on them. The text is so small that it’s hard to read from the other side of the counter. But one drawer in particular, the top rightmost drawer, has a giant manilla label with huge black text that can be clearly read from across the entire store, that reads: BURN OINTMENT.

I think I’m glad that I don’t work somewhere where the first-aid supplies need to be so prominently stored and labeled.

Actually, Thomas didn’t do any fishing while we were at the lake. But the hat is cute…
