Exit Strategy?

I also thought about titling this post “Look upon my works, ye Mommy, and despair.”

Evidence that I’ve been in grad school way too long:

Vignette number 1:
setting: coffee bar in the new artsy movie theater in town.

Barista: [As she's making my cappuccino] Were you a TA at the University?

Me: Yeah, I had you in class, right?

Barista: Yeah. Shakespeare.

Me: Right! Yeah, that was a while ago. What are you up to now?

Barista: I just finished up a Masters degree in English at the University of Florida.

Me: !!! [To be fair, she was a junior or senior when I had her in class. But still.]

Vignette number 2:
setting: my office, where I’m helping a first-year undergrad with her research paper about Sept. 11th.

Student: [reading from the paper's introduction] Just about everybody in America remembers where they were when they first heard about the September 11th attacks…

Me: [thinking to myself] I was just across the street in the Union, grabbing a pastry and getting ready to do some reading before heading over to my class in this very building…

Student: I was in Mr. So-and-So’s seventh-grade homeroom…

Me: !!! [Ouch.]

Resurfacing…

Gosh, it’s been a long time. Not sure exactly why I haven’t blogged, but I think it’s mostly because there are so so many things going on around here and there’s so much to think about, and so much that I don’t know what I think about, that I haven’t known what to write. And then once it’s been a while since I’ve written, I feel like I must reappear with something very smart/thoughful/witty/reflective, and since I can’t think of anything that smart/thoughtful/witty/reflective, I don’t post anything at all. Sigh.

This post is no exception to that, but it does have some cute photos, which is worth something, right?

So, I know you’ve all been waiting anxiously for the last couple of months to see Thomas’ halloween costume. We did finally find the camera, though it was missing for over a month. You’ll have to ask Will where he found it.

And here are a couple of my more recent favorites:

Otherwise, life around here has been a series of unpredictably alternating opposites:

  • the above-documented insane cuteness punctuated by moments of intensely frustrated screaming and grunting (usually on the part of Thomas),
  • days and days of non-progress on the dissertation punctuated by short periods of intense output,
  • loads of snow punctuated by, oh, wait, there hasn’t been anything except snow.

I’ll post more soon, since if nothing else I have lots of pictures of a certain toddler’s antic to share.
